Integrating Local and International Training for Holistic Ministerial Preparation

Shaping Future Leaders: Theological Education in FELSISA

In the Free Evangelical Lutheran Synod in South Africa (FELSISA), theological education is of paramount importance, reflecting our commitment to cultivating well-rounded leaders for the Church. Recognising the diverse needs of our communities and the global context of ministry, FELSISA has developed a dynamic approach to training its clergy, combining local education with international exposure.

Certification and Ministry Preparation

Adhering to the principles outlined in the Book of Concord and the Confessio Augustana, FELSISA maintains that “no one should publicly teach in the Church or administer the Sacraments unless he be regularly called.” This belief underscores the importance of thorough and rigorous training, ensuring that all pastoral candidates are well-prepared and duly certified before they undertake their sacred responsibilities.

Foundational Training in South Africa

The journey for our theology students begins at home, in South Africa, where they pursue a Bachelor of Arts (languages) degree at the University of Pretoria. This foundational programme equips them with essential linguistic skills and a broad understanding of theological and cultural contexts, preparing them for the specialised training that follows.

Advanced Studies Abroad

Following their initial studies, students typically continue their theological education at renowned international institutions like the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule Oberursel in Germany or other seminaries within the International Lutheran Council (ILC) family. This phase of their education is crucial, exposing them to advanced theological training and diverse ecclesiastical traditions. The experience abroad not only enhances their academic and spiritual insights but also broadens their perspectives, enabling them to engage effectively with various cultural and ministerial challenges.

The Role of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Tshwane (LTS)

Back in South Africa, the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Tshwane (LTS) plays a pivotal role in the practical and pastoral training of candidates. Registered as a Public Benefits Organisation, LTS focuses on preparing students for service in the Lutheran Church of Africa at a diploma level. Here, students engage deeply with Lutheran doctrine and practice, learning to apply their knowledge in ways that resonate with their communities.
