Deep Roots, Broad Reach: Celebrating Diversity in Worship

St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairland stands as a testament to a rich heritage and a commitment to serving a diverse congregation. Established on 11 February 1950 in Johannesburg, the congregation initially worshipped in a space provided by the Swedish Mission in Joubert Park. By 1953, they moved to Homestead Park, and later, in 1976, settled into their permanent home in Fairland with the inauguration of their current church building.

Today, St. Paul’s offers two Sunday services that cater to both our German-speaking and English-speaking members, at 8:30 am and 10:00 am respectively, with Holy Communion celebrated at each. The English service coincides with our Sunday School, providing spiritual education alongside regular worship.

As a proud member of the Free Evangelical Lutheran Synod in South Africa (FELSISA) — the oldest independent Lutheran Church Body in the country, established in 1892 — and the International Lutheran Council (ILC), we are committed to the confessional and liturgical traditions of our faith.

Our congregation reflects the vibrant mosaic of South African society, maintaining services in German while focusing primarily on English-speaking worship. We are dedicated to living out the mission of spreading God’s Word and Sacrament to make disciples of all nations.

We invite you to join us in Fairland, Johannesburg, as we continue to celebrate our diverse heritage and commit ourselves anew to the teachings and sacraments that unite and strengthen us.
