A Journey from Humble Beginnings to a Permanent Sanctuary

Born in 1958 near Wittenberg, studied theology in Pretoria and Germany, served as bishop, and obtained a Doctorate in New Testament.

The Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel Congregation in Pietermaritzburg marks a significant chapter in the religious tapestry of the region. Established on 25 November 1990, this congregation began its journey without a permanent place of worship, relying on rented spaces to gather its growing community. This period of transition did not deter the spirit of the congregation but rather strengthened their resolve and unity.

Recognising the need for a dedicated place of worship to call their own, the congregation laid down the foundation stone of their new church in the serene neighborhood of Prestbury, Pietermaritzburg, on 15 July 1999. This pivotal moment was followed by the dedication of the newly constructed church on 7 November 1990, a landmark event that solidified their presence in the community.

Today, the Evangelical Lutheran Immanuel Congregation stands as a beacon of faith and fellowship in Pietermaritzburg. Services are conducted exclusively in English, catering to a diverse congregation that continues to uphold the values and teachings of the Lutheran tradition. The church not only serves as a place of worship but also as a center for community engagement, where members come together to support one another and engage in outreach programs that benefit the wider community.
