Celebrating Afrikaans Ministry and Community Spirit in Piet Retief

Parish Pastor

Born in Johannesburg, studied theology in Pretoria and Germany, and served as pastor in Lüneburg, Arcadia and Panbult.
Since February 1993 Worship Services in Afrikaans were held in Piet Retief by Pastor Dr. Wilhelm Weber (jnr) to accommodate Afrikaans-speaking members of his congregation, the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Wittenberg. These services were initially held on the premises of the St. Johns Anglican Church and continued with Pastor Gerald Paul, when Pastor Weber was called to the Lutheran Seminary in Tswane. When Pastor Rüdiger Gevers was called to serve the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Panbult in June 2002 he was also tasked by the Synodical Council of FELSISA to serve these Afrikaans-speaking members. Subsequently it was decided at the Synodical General Meeting in August 2002 that a new congregation be constituted in Piet Retief with an Afrikaans ministry. This was finally realized and implemented as the Synodical General Meeting on 15. August 2006. The congregation was officially named the Evangelies-Lutherse Christusgemeente Piet Retief.
The congregation decided in June 2004 to buy its own church buildings on the corner of Kruger and Joubert Street. A disused lodge of the Freemasons was fully renovated and eventually inaugurated on 4. December 2005. When Pastor Gevers was called to the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Vryheid, Pastor Matthias Albers continued the ministry in Panbult and in Piet Retief from July 2012 until the present day. The Evangelies-Lutherse Kerk Piet Retief currently has about 85 members. Worship Services are held every Sunday at 11h00.
