From 31 October to 1 November 2025 the church councillors of our Synod gathered at FELS Retreat. After the formalities had been dealt with, there was an opportunity for interaction in a more relaxed atmosphere around the braai fires. Old friendships were rekindled, new acquaintances made and experiences shared.
On Saturday morning the program commenced with a devotion by Pastor Martin Kurt Paul.
In session 1 Pastor Dr. Karl Böhmer took us through the ‘Life Norms and Values’ of the FELSISA constitution. He showed us what our “foundational” articles say about ecumenical encounters. We realised that there is a need to gain a good understanding of the foundation upon which we have agreed to build our church and Synod.
In session 2 Bishop Helmut Paul discussed combined services and local cooperation with other churches. Definitions should be clarified in order to identify clear boundaries. Small group discussions were held with a lot of active engagement. Real-life examples were discussed, which highlighted unique challenges that congregations experience.
Session 3 was presented by Mr. Lutz Böhmer on ‘Individual Witnessing and Relationships in the World’. He motivated us to a life of constant witnessing leading to lifestyle evangelisation and to sow the seed of the Gospel wherever we are.
In our Synod we have members coming from vastly different backgrounds and living in very different communities and situations. It was uplifting to experience the united vision towards ensuring the longevity of our Synod. ▪
