Blending Technical Skill and Theological Depth in South African Lutheranism

I, Helmut Paul, was born in Ermelo (11.06.1981) and grew up on a farm near Piet Retief. After finishing school (1999), I decided to pursue an engineering degree at the University of Pretoria. During the latter part of my first year (2000) I decided to study theology with the intention of becoming a pastor. In 2001 I enrolled for Bachelor of Arts degree. My majors were Biblical Languages (Greek and Hebrew) and Psychology. Upon completion I continued my studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Oberursel, Germany. Apart from studying a total of 4 years in Oberursel, I also studied for two Semesters at the University of Leipzig and one year at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Misouri, USA. In March 2010 I successfully compleded my 1st theological exam and returned to South Africa. I was ordained on the 17th of July 2011 in the same congregation and have since served here. I am married my lovely wife Gisela, and we have been blessed with four children, Kyle, Helen, Nina and Oliver.
